Omegle, a widely-used website facilitating chat and interaction with strangers worldwide, has closed its doors after a 14-year run. The owner, Leif K-Brooks, cited the overwhelming stress and costs associated with operating and combating misuse as the primary reasons for the decision.
Established in 2009, Omegle provided a platform for users to engage with random individuals on the internet while maintaining anonymity. Its appeal was fueled, in part, by the absence of mandatory user registration for chat participation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform experienced a surge in usage as people confined to their homes sought connection and conversation in the virtual realm.
